Join us at April’s TecSocial to learn about what’s happening at the Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment, and how other Cape Breton groups can collaborate with and benefit from this regional resource.

Cape Breton was Canada’s earliest centre of industrial development. Its once thriving coal and steel industries and strong economy left a legacy of post-industrial sites and weakened economic activity. The Verschuren Centre is playing a vital role in helping to revitalize the lands, waters and economy through the development of new growth sectors – clean technology and industrial sustainability. Cape Breton is now poised to become a leader in this new economy, allowing its communities to proposer once again.

Cape Breton University (CBU) has a goal of becoming North America's first energy self-sufficient campus. For CBU and the Verschuren Centre, this means creating and using technologies to generate, integrate and store energy, as well as repurposing and using waste resources in real-world, community-scale applications. With more than 20 staff members, the Verschuren Centre is currently managing 20-plus active contracts (more than 30 in total for 2013-2014) and generating over $3 million in revenues from both private sector and governmental clients in Nova Scotia, elsewhere in Canada, and in the United States.

The Verschuren Centre's CEO, Dr. Andrew Swanson, will give you all the details when we see you on April 3.

Who's Dr. Andrew K. Swanson?

Dr. Andrew Swanson is CEO of the Verschuren Centre at Cape Breton University. He is responsible for overall strategic direction, business development, and leadership of the centre’s clean technology research teams in the areas of mine water management, environmental remediation, green mining, bio-products, and renewable energy.

Dr. Swanson has extensive experience as an accomplished biotechnology research professor at Case Western Reserve University and at Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada. He is also an entrepreneur who has developed several start-up companies that commercially deployed and scaled clean energy and sustainability innovations. Most recently as vice president (R&D) at Phycal Inc., an Ohio integrated advanced bio-fuels company, he led the research operations and IP development in the areas of carbon sequestration, advanced fermentation production scale-up, bio-product commercialization, and advanced water treatment technologies. In this capacity, he helped grow the company from two people to more than 60 full-time employees and gross revenues of over $55 million.

Dr. Swanson obtained his M.Sc. in plant and environmental science from Western University, and a PhD in biological sciences from Simon Fraser University.

TecSocial is a monthly meeting for those with an interest in technology and entrepreneurship. It is a free event and is open to the public. A cash bar will be available and door prizes and appetizers (limited quantities) are compliments of our partners, Innovacorp and Membertou Trade & Convention Centre.
