On November 22, a friend to many in our technology community passed in Halifax (View his obituary here). Bill Faulkner spent a considerable part of his working life here in Cape Breton.  He was a pioneer of computer technology in Sydney, having first brought the Texas Instruments computer to his shop at the bus stop on George Street, and then becoming the Apple franchisee with his store on Bentinck Street.

Bill Faulkner (1945-2016)Bill's good nature was infectious and he was always there with positive encouragement for those in the early days of the information technology industry in Sydney.

Bill's influence touched a lot of people, many of whom will never realize his impact on their lives. He, with his friend Mike Peters, sold, fixed, and equipped computers or wrote software for many of the  early tech enthusiasts in the area.  He helped his friend, Paul Whealy, establish the Rolling Phones out of that same computer shop on Bentinck Street. And if you’ve visited a doctor in Nova Scotia in the last 25 years, there was a good chance that visit was recorded and the government invoiced on software Bill and Marilyn wrote.

There are many, many stories to be told.  On Thursday at TecSocial, we’ll hear a few of them from friends and colleagues who will bless us with tales of his warmth and charm. Please join us.

TecSocial is a monthly meeting for those with an interest in technology and entrepreneurship. It is a free event and is open to the public. A cash bar will be available and door prizes and appetizers (limited quantities) are compliments of our partners, Innovacorp and Holiday Inn Sydney-Waterfront..
