App Camp is one idea to attract more people to consider a career in information technology. Some others you may be aware of include Lego Robotics Camp, Cape Breton Hackathon, and First Lego League. To learn more about initiatives like these and to share your ideas, you'll want to be at the next TecSocial, where we'll host this roundtable discussion on attracting interest in IT careers.

The discussion will be led by Darren Andrews from NSCC's Marconi Campus. Darren is an educator and an entrepreneur in the local IT community.

Darren graduated from Dalhousie University with a doctorate in the field of chemical informatics. Upon graduation, he held a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, where he was part of a team that data-mined drug and gene expression databases to determine correlations between drug effectiveness and specific cancer types. He began teaching computer programming courses at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) in the information systems programmer program in 1998 and joined the college as a full-time web development instructor in 2002. In 2005, Darren started his first business, DTA Web Development. In January 2012, he incorporated Code The Solution Canada Inc., which offers web development and custom programming services to clients around the world.

TecSocial is a monthly meeting for those with an interest in technology and entrepreneurship. It is a free event and is open to the public. A cash bar will be available and door prizes and appetizers (limited quantities) are compliments of our partners, Innovacorp and Membertou Trade & Convention Centre.
